[CFP] Health Sciences in Communist Europe

Special Issue of Canadian Slavonic Papers / Revue canadienne des slavistes:

Health Sciences in Communist Europe

Canadian Slavonic Papers/Revue canadienne des slavistes invites contributions to a special issue that focuses on the health sciences in communist Europe.  The history of health, wellness and illness has been neglected in this context, despite the unique contributions and approaches of the communist regimes. From close collaboration with Western scholars beyond the iron curtain and negotiation with the political requirements, to aggressive interventions and alternative approaches to public and community health, the study of the health sciences opens up numerous multi-disciplinary questions regarding the complexities of public health and health sciences in communist Europe. Therefore, we invite articles from a range of disciplines that explore health, wellness and illness on the individual, community and institutional levels in the history, culture, and socio-political life of the region in the communist period.

Possible subjects include (but are not limited to):

Mental health, sexual health (i.e. abortion, contraception, STDs), gendered notions of health, medical science and childcare (infant mortality, pregnancy, notions of healthy children, childcare systems), public health, disability, healthcare system in general, traditional medicine and socialist modernity, transnational collaboration in health sciences, health sciences and politics, socialist ethics and healthcare, healthcare and marginalised groups, etc.

The issue aims to be multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary.

Manuscripts may be in English or French.  The normal peer-review process will apply.
